Content governance might not seem like the most exciting topic, but I recently created a credentials inventory and I want to share why it matters.
Your L&D team probably juggles a lot of content across varied platforms: LMS, LXP, course catalogs, training calendars, sales proposals and estimates, etc. You need the course names and descriptions to match across all of those channels.
The solution is a central source of truth that includes all of the metadata for all of your offerings. A learning inventory is a good place to start as the basis for your course catalog.
The format is whatever integrates best across your learning ecosystem because you will want to automate and pull from the inventory as much as possible. The goal is to reduce human error. So develop an Excel spreadsheet, database, SharePoint list, etc. and stick with it.
My credentials inventory stores the information that should be the same across the credentialing platform, course catalog, analytics dashboards, and any other assets that communicate our offerings.
Perform cleanup and spot checks periodically, and the system should never get overwhelmingly messy! Routing catalog hygiene ensures your learning assets don’t get lost between systems.
