Is “Act Your Wage” Good Advice?

I’ve heard this phrase “act your wage” in multiple workplaces, and I have some opinions.

In a nutshell, “act your wage” means that you should perform only the tasks associated with your salary band and not do too much extra. This mentality prevents an organization from taking advantage of you, but also could hinder your professional growth.

✅ If you want to get a promotion, you need to prove yourself and start taking on more responsibility. Volunteering for stretch projects or leadership opportunities is a great way to show you are ready.

❌ But this could put you in a bad position where you are performing more responsibilities for free, with no compensation or title adjustment. Your employer might be happy to string you along without an official promotion.

So I think it’s a balancing act. To get a promotion, you do need to do the job before you get the job; otherwise you won’t have stories to share in your interview. But you want your effort to match your pay, so boundaries can be a good thing.

How have you all solved this dilemma?
