A lot of us learning professionals, myself included, claim to be “lifelong learners”.
I’m a very curious person who likes to be exposed to new ideas inside and outside of my workplace, so I wanted to share a few examples of how I am always learning, even in my free time.
- I attend author talks through local book stores like Acapella and Charis here in Atlanta. I’ve gotten to see Roxane Gay, Winston Groom, Emily Nagoski, and many other scholars and experts give insightful speeches.
- I take classes at my local animal shelter. Leveling up my dog handling skills by attending sessions facilitated by shelter experts on training, dog walking, and adoption matchmaking keeps my skills fresh!
- I visit museums like the Atlanta History Center, Fernbank Natural History Museum, and the High Museum of Art. All of these have evening programming that are adults only; those special events are my jam.
- I participate in book clubs. At any given time I am probably participating in some sort of book club, whether through work, various friend groups, or through the Meetup app. It’s a great way to meet people too.
- I use free resources like the library and podcasts to learn more about a variety of topics from personal finance, the fall of civilizations, political ideologies, etc.
- I sing in a local chorus which pushes me to learn music theory and grow as a vocalist. The director of the Atlanta Women’s Chorus has very high standards for us, and we have to memorize our music, so this requires a lot of focus and studying.
What are some ways that you stay curious and expose yourself to new ways of thinking?
