‘Know Your Rights’ Digital Learning Experience

One of my best friends is a public defender for the city of Nashville and we had the opportunity to collaborate recently on a project. I consulted with some of the attorneys and their public information coordinator to develop an eLearning course for their clients.

This work happened while I was completing the NovoEd Course ‘Learning Experience Design: From Ideas to Impact.’ It’s a 5 week long, asynchronous, totally FREE online learning experience that counts for 10 SHRM certification credits, and it provided the framework for my conversations with the Nashville public defenders.

Following the process laid out in the NovoEd course, I was reminded to keep the learner at the center of my work (in this case, clients of the Nashville Defenders office). It made me deeply consider their clients’ needs and contexts. They tend to come from low-income, marginalized communities of color. Upon being arrested, these community members are thrust into the confusing and traumatizing criminal legal system.

When speaking with SMEs, this question kept popping up: what do clients NEED to know in order to navigate the criminal legal system in a way that minimizes harm?

As a result of my conversations, I developed a scenario-based eLearning course where clients can see the consequences of their choices in a safe space. Ultimately, the measurable results will show lower bonds set, as well as clients spending less time in jail waiting for trial. Both outcomes lessen disruption and trauma in peoples’ lives.

I highly recommend anyone interested in LXD take the NovoEd course when the next cohort registers, and if you’re interested in checking out my Nashville Defenders digital learning experience, click here.
