Periods of Professional Change

Periods of change can be scary. During times of uncertainty, focus on what you can control: quality, routines, and connection.

This is my first corporate acquisition that I’ve been a part of, and so many factors can be unnerving. Things are changing at the speed of light, and I’m having to be more agile than ever.

There are a couple of things I can control that are making the transition easier:

  1. The quality of my work. I am still being meticulous about my craft, quality reviewing every step of the way, and connecting with SMEs regularly. I want to be seen as a reliable partner during all the upheaval.
  2. My daily routines. I still prefer to schedule meetings in the morning, chunk my deep focus time in the afternoon, and take a lunch break in the yard with my dog. This predictability is comforting.
  3. Connection with my peers. As people come and go from the organization, I try to stay connected via LinkedIn or WhatsApp, as well as make myself available to teammates in my remote work environment.

We can’t control everything during acquisitions, but we can control how we show up and how we move through our day. Being reminded that we are in charge of our lives because we control our reactions to everything is a comfort.
