This week I am taking the Prosci Change Management course, which results in a practitioner certification. It got me thinking about what other certifications or qualifications are useful in an instructional designer’s toolkit.
Besides a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, there are many non-traditional pathways to education in our field.
If you don’t want to go back for an entire university degree, but you want to continue to grow and learn, here are some options:
- APTD/CPTD from ATD – Our industry’s professional organization issues these credentials, so they have a lot of credibility.
- PMP from PMI – For Senior IDs or L&D Program Managers, the PMP is the gold standard for project management.
- TechSmith or Articulate credentials – Tool-specific qualifications can be especially useful for eLearning Developers or freelancer who have a niche and don’t want to break the bank.
- IAAP Certifications – The accessibility credentials offered by the IAAP can benefit your whole team as this expertise enables you to build inclusive digital learning experiences.
- SHRM-CP or SCP – These HR certifications are a benefit for folks who work more on the internal talent development side, for example in leadership development or performance review cycles.
- Codecademy’s Pathways – These courses can help you upskill on HTML/CSS, JavaScript, among many other topics like data analytics and AI agents, which is helpful for folks in technical training.
- Prosci Change Management certification – This practitioner credential is useful for L&D folks who act as performance consultants as we often lead change initiatives from a training perspective.
These are just a few ideas if you are looking to grow in new areas! Each of these courses can greatly benefit your career and help you level up in your organization.
