Upskilling for a Promotion/Raise
Aspiring for a promotion or raise in your current role? Let’s talk about how you can upskill to achieve that goal! Coming from a K-12 background, corporate career pathways were a bit alien to me, so hopefully this 3 part series can shed light on how to advance your career in the corporate world.
Whatever the next role in your career progression may be, it will most likely require a different skill set. You may be looking to take on some people or project management responsibilities, or need to master different digital platforms and software.
Once you figure out what role you are aiming for, identify the required skills for that role. Do research by reading posts on LinkedIn and studying job postings. What are companies asking for? For me, I decided I wanted a senior ID role in the software industry, so I knew I would need to focus on leadership and technical skills.
After listing out the skills required for your desired role, narrow down the list and learn those skills. You will have to be strategic because you can’t learn everything. I wanted to enroll in training on agile methodologies, coding, eLearning authoring tools, and consulting. I had a short term job search and knew I wanted a new position within the next 3-4 months, so I focused on technical skills by enrolling in Codecademy, taking advanced courses on Camtasia and Articulate Storyline, and participating in eLearning Heroes Challenges.
With your new skillset in tow, now it’s time to apply your new skills to application materials. Redo your digital portfolio to reflect these new skills. I made new product training videos for my website that highlighted both my knowledge of programming languages as well as video production skills. Brush up your LinkedIn profile, resume, and cover letter template to showcase your hard work.
Absorb new knowledge like a sponge when you are looking for a promotion and a raise. There are free eBooks and podcasts and webinars, so take advantage of all the resources at your disposal to be constantly growing.
