The Road to L&D Conference

Last week I had the privilege of speaking at the TLDC Conference “The Road to L&D.” This is an annual free digital event created by Luis Malbas for transitioning teachers.

My session was called “Preparing for a Smooth Transition (While Still in the Classroom).” I discussed how to leverage the resources available to you in your day job while trying to pivot careers.

I dedicated a portion of my session to the mindset shift that needs to occur during this period. Healthy boundaries are not always a part of the culture in K12 education, because teaching can be a whole identity. Protecting your privacy, finding allies, and taking advantage of your benefits will all be helpful.

Some quick takeaways for a sneak peek:

  • Download gradebooks, survey results, or any other data or measurement you could translate in your resume.

  • Create opportunities to build skills for your new career by creating learning experiences for adults like faculty PD, workshops or parent sessions.

  • Take advantage of teacher discounts or school subscriptions for edTech and authoring tools.

To watch a replay, check out the YouTube video here. And here is the slide deck.

And as a final reminder for transitioning teachers, I offer a couple free Teacher -> ID chats a week if you want to chat about your career pivot. Sign up on the ‘Contact’ page on my website.
