Technical Training Audiences

For those of us in technical training, there are three audiences: employees, customers, and partners.

We build product education for all sorts of reasons across those three audiences. Onboarding new employees, rolling out new software, cross-training for unique solutions, and implementations with new customers or partners.

  1. Employees - Internal audiences include technical teams, client services, sales, legal, talent development, etc. Training on an out-of-the-box standard solution should suffice.

  2. Customers - It always helps to ask the product team what workflows will be most common for the customer. Those workflows become your learning objectives for the training.

  3. Partners - Partners have domain expertise and you want to enable them to succeed by sharing your product expertise. A strong partner portal full of self-serve resources is key.

No matter the audience, you want to create as many opportunities for authentic, hands-on practice with real-world workflows as possible. These groups do have things in common, and it’s likely you will deliver learning experiences to all three groups at some point. Transferrable materials have a lot of value across audiences.
