Stuck in a Job Search?

Do you keep getting stuck in the same step whilst job hunting?

That’s where you need to focus your transition efforts.

For example, when I started my transition to instructional design, I got barely any interviews for the first 6 months. This was informative: my resume and portfolio weren’t doing the job. So I stepped back and revamped all of my application materials. Once I put myself back out there with a new and improved resume and portfolio, I interviewed with nine organizations in that first month.

So let’s say you are not getting any invitations to interview, maybe your resume and cover letter need some work. Once you are framing your experience more appropriately you will get more call backs.

If you’ve gotten multiple interviews but never make it past the recruiter? This means your resume and application materials are working! Focus your efforts on practicing for that phone screener and answering broad questions about your experience.

And if you’ve made it to the final round multiple times, shown off your portfolio, done the panel interviews, but never got an offer…You need to work on telling stories about the impact you’ve had at previous organizations, not tweaking your resume.

It can be hard to focus your efforts because there are so many ways to approach a job search. Think about what stage you are stuck at and spend time there!

Bonus Resource: If you’re wanting to practice for an instructional design interview, check out my free slide deck with sample questions. These are the most common questions I encountered when I was interviewing.
