Layoffs are Senseless
Can you do anything to prevent being laid off?
Over the last year it’s become clear to me that layoffs are not based on professional merit. They are senseless.
The truth is we are numbers on a spreadsheet when it comes to layoffs. We are not privy to the conversations where leaders decide who goes and who stays.
My mom asked me recently if there was anything I could do to make myself invaluable and avoid being laid off. I’ve always been a high achiever so it’s not like I need to change my performance expectations for myself. I already go above and beyond daily.
I didn’t have to think about layoffs as a teacher, but in tech they are quite common.
So I will keep performing to the best of my ability and try to bring as much value to my employer as possible. And then if my time does come eventually, I’ll know it wasn’t personal.
