Part I: Remote Work and my Professional Life
Remote work has been a blessing in every aspect of my life, and over the last year I have felt less stressed professionally than at any point in my career. My work-life balance is healthy and my on-the-job efficiency is as high as ever.
I wrote a list of benefits to remote work, but it was so long, I split it into two categories: Professional Life, and Personal Life. This post will explore some of the ways that remote work enhances my professional life.
Cross-Site Opportunities – Many of the DE&I initiatives I’ve gotten involved in include associates from four states. My amazing mentor was a Norfolk hire, whilst I’m residing in Indianapolis. I wouldn’t have had these uplifting connections if my organization hadn’t been forced to think about ways to connect us from different locations.
Gender Equality – Microaggressions and sexual harassment occur less frequently over digital platforms, which benefits women greatly. Remote work levels the playing field for professional development and promotions by removing barriers to access such as boys’ clubs and office ‘helper’ roles that women often get pushed into.
Productivity – My home office has way less distractions. I can record audio right at my desk without having to hide in a closet. There are no booming voices around me on WebEx calls. People aren’t walking by trying to talk and interrupting my state of flow. I’m not self conscious to lean into ideas, Google how-tos, and try new things.
Additional Time – Because I don’t have a commute, I have more availability to pick up overtime on occasion. I don’t mind working a bit extra as needed (as long as it is my choice). Having an energizing work-from-home environment means I can take on extra responsibilities.
Efficiency – Working remotely forced my teams to create a digital system for staying organized with a dispersed work force. We make really good use of WorkFront because people can’t swing by and check your progress. I also save time not having to pack and unpack my laptop, planner, and lunch each day, or switching over my audio/visual settings going from home to work offices.
Stay tuned for the myriad of ways that remote work benefits my personal life. That list is even longer.
