Building Culture on a Distributed Team

If you are part of a globally dispersed team like me, you have to be intentional about building community. Team culture doesn’t happen as organically in a remote environment.

Here are some ideas for building culture on a distributed team:

  • Shared calendar - This is a place to post birthdays, work anniversaries, time off, etc.

  • Optional standing socials - Have time set aside on the calendar weekly. People can swing by if they have availability and catch up on all the “water cooler” gab that would happen in an office. “How was your weekend,” “my kid graduated from high school,” “did your move go smoothly," etc.

  • Celebrations - Always be recognizing team members for personal and professional milestones. Take time to acknowledge things like certifications, weddings, speaking engagements, becoming a first-time homeowner, and other achievements.

  • Kudos board - Organizations of a certain size will most likely have this, but you can also create your own. There should be a digital space to publicly thank colleagues or commend them on a job well done.

What are some other ways you cultivate a sense of community in your remote team?
