A Cabin Work Retreat

I worked remotely from a mountain cabin in Tennessee for a week!

For the most part, I am currently based in Indianapolis, but I am able to work from other locations up to a certain amount of time each year. I’ve done the occasional day or two from my mom’s house in South Florida but it wasn’t until this summer that I decided to take full advantage of the remote work policy.

My search parameters were this: a rural mountain cabin, within ~6 hour driving distance. I also had two non-negotiables:

  1. Dog friendly

  2. Amazing WiFi

I found a cabin with an EPIC view, multiple workspaces, and its own dedicated fiber optic WiFi network. It was the perfect getaway for a working retreat!

The cabin I ultimately chose was in Altamont, TN (between Chattanooga and Nashville). We stayed from Sunday-Friday. Each day, I’d start work early so I could end with enough time to do a waterfall hike or barbecue quest in the afternoon.

Driving made a huge difference because I could pack all my equipment: laptop riser, portable monitor, mouse, keyboard, and headset. The setup felt just as accommodating as my home office. We also brought a cooler full of food staples so we could do a lot of cooking.

There was a one hour time difference, but that worked in my favor because meetings occurred even earlier in Altamont than they would in Indianapolis.

How was it overall? My productivity was the same, and I felt more peaceful and less rushed because I was deep in the woods. I think this is going to be a summer tradition for our household. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
