My current title is βL&D Program Managerβ. What is program management, anyways?
Itβs similar to project management in that both project and program managers oversee execution of an initiative. They are responsible for meeting goals and deadlines, and coordinating the team members working in that area. The PMP is a helpful certification for both.
However, programs are ongoing and projects are time-bound. So a website launch might be a project because once it is live, the project manager moves on to the next thing. But a credentialing program continues indefinitely, so the program manager stays assigned to that program.
Program management is strategic and considers the “big picture”. Program managers think about how to further business goals. They might oversee multiple short-term projects at once (for example, within the credentialing program, there could be an automation project AND a public-facing landing page project).
I highly recommend following Jean Kang for more program management advice on LinkedIn. Who are some of the leading voices that you all suggest we check out?
