Video Demo Best Practices

I coached a new team member on Camtasia recently and realized many of the tips I shared come from experience.  I picked these up through repetition, trial and error, and lots of gracious feedback from peers. Take these tips and skip all that!

I spend a lot of time in Camtasia making software demos and tutorials, so here are some of the lessons I have learned through practice:

  1. Know when to slow down and when to speed up – I add a pause when a cursor reaches its destination, but speed up typing to 2x.
  2. Add callouts if the cursor doesn’t show where to find something – If a link or button is mentioned only in narration, find a way to highlight it visually.
  3. Pay attention to zoom levels: I adjust my cursor to 175%, and when I capture screen recordings, I zoom into the browser and application 125%.
  4. Be consistent with animations, behaviors, and transitions: Don’t use card swipe, fade, and grow/shrink at random, instead, have an intentional look and feel that is consistent throughout the project.
  5. Give learners agency – Include playback speed control, closed captions they can toggle on and off, full screen options, and an expandable transcript.

These are just a few ways to elevate your Camtasia game and make polished and professional videos.
