The Benefits of Microlearning

What is the value of bite-sized learning?

This approach differs from traditional training delivery, which is often formatted into formal courses. Microlearning breaks content down into small “bite-sized” chunks, each focusing on a single learning objective.

Today’s learners are busy and mobile, and long form training might not meet their needs in every scenario. Sometimes a single use case simulation, demo video, job aid, or quick reference guide is enough.

Here are some of the benefits to a micro learning approach:

  • It is iterative. Rapid development is a factor in some projects. Being able to deliver value quickly is a priority for agile teams. Make something small and get it out there! Bite-sized learning enables us to break down the work into the smallest pieces possible.
  • It is self-serve. Learners don’t have to scroll through an hour long eLearning course or scrub through a three hour recording to find what they need. A searchable library of content makes bite-sized learning easy to navigate.
  • It is relevant. Each piece of content is focused on one objective. This means learners can find exactly what they need. This approach cuts out the fluff and provides what the learner needs “just-in-time.”
  • It is transferrable. Without all the filler providing context before and after the learning, the content could apply to any audience. It gets straight to the point. The content can be plugged into learning pathways for different audiences because it is light touch.
  • It is efficient. You won’t waste as much time with bite sized-learning. Maybe instead of a six minute use case video, glancing at a quick reference guide will suffice. Things like microlearnings and job aids are time savers.

These are just some of the reasons you should consider bite-sized learning when crafting a learning experience.
