L&D Job Titles

Job titles in L&D are not consistent. This can make job hunting tricky when you are trying to communicate your role, or search for new roles.

An Instructional Design Associate at one company might be an Instructional Designer 1 elsewhere, or an Instructional Design Specialist. My current title is L&D Program Manager, but similar titles include Instructional Design Program Manager and Learning Program Manager.

It gets complicated when you are job hunting because your title might not communicate to the outside world exactly what you do at the company. It’s ok to slightly modify the wording as long as you are not lying about your level in the organization.

I know when I was job hunting, I would search for the following terms: instructional designer, learning experience designer, customer education, technical training, L&D, certification, and curriculum developer. Any one of those phrases in the job title could have been a good fit!

So you might have to get creative when looking for a new position across career platforms. Our industry does not have consistent naming conventions.
