There are 5 pillars to improve physical and mental health and your career isn’t one of them.
Listening to the Ologies podcast episode “Salugenology with Julia Hotz” by Alie Ward recently, I was intrigued by the trend of social prescriptions. These physician referrals are non-traditional recommendations to participate in community-based activities.
The five pillars of human health are: Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging. I was heartened to realize I engage in all five.
Social prescriptions are not meant to replace conventional medicine. However, strengthening your social connections is proven to benefit physical and mental health outcomes, and complements medical interventions.
Career is not listed as one of the pillars. No doctors are going to prescribe more work as a way to heal yourself. If anything, I’ve heard of doctors recommending leaving toxic jobs.
That being said, a stable job provides the foundation for you to pursue the five pillars.
Could social prescribing help with the soaring cost of medicine and the loneliness epidemic in America? Find out by visiting my blog linked in the comments below. I post resources to the podcast and a few other informative articles.
