I just finished season two of Severance and the corporate metaphors are way too real. I’m not sure they are even metaphors because they too closely depict the work culture many of us participate in daily.
I’ll start by saying I like my job and I like my company.
But anyone working in the corporate world knows we compartmentalize and present a sanitized version of ourselves to our peers. Maybe we cover our tattoos, choose a sterile computer background instead of our favorite fantasy fiction reference, or remain silent on a political topic we care passionately about.
Are our brains not severed between these personas?
I love that the actual work in Severance makes zero sense. Employees beep boop in a computer, numbers jump around the screen, and a progress bar increases. It’s just like me trying to explain instructional design to my friends.
In the show, when a beloved character leaves the office forever, the Lumon company provides a watermelon carving of his head to his peers so they can snack AND mourn. We often get trinkets in place of real labor reform.
Anyways, this is a vaguely work related post to say if you work in the corporate world you’ll probably get a kick out of the show Severance. For some, it might hit too close to home.
