Maintaining eLearning When Content Changes

How do you maintain eLearning content when the information changes? I saw a great example of this in the wild recently and wanted to share.

Scaled Agile recently updated the SAFe framework to 6.0, and 6.0 has many changes in terminology.

Some old -> new vocabulary:

  • Scrum Master -> Team Coach
  • Scrum of Scrums -> Coach Sync
  • Program Increment -> Planning Interval

Their eLearning has a lot of talking head videos, and any instructional designer knows how difficult it is to update those. When content changes but you don’t have the resources to film all new eLearning, add a text-based disclaimer on the video and into the transcript.

A Learning Content Management System could push these updates to different assets, or you could make the changes manually. If only a few words changed, just add a note to the course and republish (this is what SAFe chose to do).

Working in technical training, every time there is a new version of the software we have to look at the implications. Do we need all new screen recordings? Voice over? Scripts? Or will a lighter touch suffice?

Every instructional design team needs a sustainable strategy for maintaining content as part of their governance.
